From gathering all the supplies to creating a comfortable, calming atmosphere, check out this comprehensive guide on creating the perfect home spa day.
With a simple step-by-step process and printable checklist included, you'll be ready for some well-deserved pampering in no time!

1. Set the mood and spa-like atmosphere.

Music, scent, and atmospheric lighting are key components of a successful home spa day.

Decorate the place with flowers, and add soft and comfortable pillows, candles, small greens, and potpourri.

You could dim the lights and light some scented candles to create a more tranquil atmosphere.

Put on soft music or nature sounds (e.g., cascading water) to help set the mood for your spa day experience.

Use essential oils to gently scent the air – this further helps you relax and adds an element of luxury. You can put them in a diffuser or use a room spray. The frequently used essential oils to create the spa atmosphere are:

  • Lavender
  • Bergamot
  • Rosemary
  • Eucalyptus

2. Choose and prepare for your favorite at-home spa treatments.

Think about the services you want to include in your home spa day and make a menu or list. Home spa day ideas may include a facial, a massage, some exfoliation, mud masks, hand and foot massages, scent therapy, or skin brushing.

Choose whatever activities are most suitable for your space, what you or your guests need, and what will help you relax. It’s a good idea to determine how long it will take so that you can plan accordingly.

Relaxing home spa treatment ideas:

Relaxing warm bath or shower

Start by taking a long bubble bath in the hot tub with your favorite scented bath bombs or salts to help soothe your mind before starting your treatments.

A hot shower or a steam shower would also be a good way to open your pores and soften your skin for other spa treatments you have prepared.

Aromatherapy shower

The steam shower is one of the best places for aromatherapy. Place a bowl or cup of water with 15 drops of your favorite essential oil in the shower. While doing the steam shower, you'll smell the aroma waft inside.

Home sauna

Step in the sauna for 15-20 minutes to sweat off toxins and stress from your body.

It will be a relaxing way to start your at-home spa day to sit in the sauna and just let your mind slow down.

Home saunas can be indoor or outdoor, with an infrared sauna or traditional sauna. Check which sauna works best for you and your home.

Hair conditioning treatment or hair mask

There are hair mask products you can buy. Read the instructions to know how long the treatment should take and what you need.

If you want to make the home spa treatment as sustainable and natural as possible, you can make a DIY hair mask.

You also need to prepare this before the scheduled home spa day so everything's ready, and you simply apply it.

Steam facial

Steam helps open pores, release clogged sebum, and remove dirt buildup in the skin. It also helps decongest sinuses for better breathing.

To prepare your facial steamer, you need a large bowl with warm steaming water and a towel to cover your head while you inhale the steam.

Put essential oils with a soothing smell, such as lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, and chamomile, to help you relax more while doing the steam.

You can also add dried herbs or flowers in the water, like dried rose petals and dried calendula.

The flowers add to the spa aesthetics and also have health benefits when their scents are inhaled.

Exfoliating facial

Facial scrubs will help improve the circulation in your face, so you get a healthy glow. It will also help your skin absorb products better and give you smoother skin.

However, the face is more sensitive than the body's skin, so be extra gentle when you perform an exfoliating facial scrub.

You can use natural ingredients such as oatmeal and honey, banana and oatmeal, or brown sugar for gentler facial exfoliation.

Body scrub

Body scrub removes dead skin cells and helps moisturize your skin. You can hire someone from the spa to do the exfoliating body scrub. Use your favorite body scrub product, or simply use some products in your pantry.

For example, mix brown sugar and coconut oil (almond oil will also work) in a bowl. Next, add 15-20 drops of fragrance oil to the mixture. Mix until you achieve your desired consistency and scrub.

Coffee powder or oatmeal and honey are also effective body scrubs.

Hand and feet treatment

Our hands and feet are parts of our bodies that do most of the work. Thus, they need proper pampering and moisturizing.

Start by preparing a hand soak. Add half a lemon and Epsom salt (or sea salt) to a warm water bowl. Soak your hands for 10 minutes.

Give your tired feet a respite with a warm and relaxing foot soak. You can use the same lemon and salt mixture and add a few drops of peppermint oil. If you get smelly feet at the end of the day, add tea tree oil and 3 tbsp of baking soda to the soaked mixture to help eliminate the odor.

You can scrub your hands and feet using the same store-bought product for the body scrub or make your own before your manicure and pedicure.

Gently scrub your hands and feet for five minutes and rinse thoroughly.

Proceed to cleaning your nails and adding color if you like. You can hire a nail artist to have your nails done by professionals. Or you and your friends can take turns in doing your nails. This is a perfect time to catch up.

3. Gather all necessary spa equipment and products.

A big part of a successful home spa day relies on having access to all the essential items. So look around for home spa products –or make your own—specifically designed for your chosen treatment. When gathering supplies for your spa day, don't forget to read the directions on the packaging and prepare any ingredients needed before starting the treatment.

Spa equipment and essentials:

Home Sauna

Home saunas come in different sizes, heating mechanisms, and location options (indoor or outdoor). Most home saunas are easy to assemble and maintain, so you don’t have to worry about setting them up.

Jet tub or steam shower

Moist heat therapy can relax and soothe sore muscles and ligaments. So hot baths or steam showers should be a part of your ultimate home spa experience.

Massage table

Prepare a high-quality massage table if you plan on getting a professional massage.

Some massage tables can be tilted, which is best for various spa treatments like the Master Massage 30" Midas Tilt Portable Massage Table Package.

These massage tables have a sturdy lift-back mechanism allowing clients to change positions quickly, making them perfect for massages, facials, manicures, waxing, reflexology, and acupuncture.

Ensure you have access to the necessary oils, lotions, sheets, and warming pads for a more comfortable massage experience.

If you need a full body scrub, use massage tables that are easy to clean, so it’s convenient both for you and your therapist.

Massage chairs

If you want to avoid hiring a massage therapist, use massage chairs with different massage styles and speeds. You can adjust the setting to suit your preference. Most top-notch massage chairs emulate the motion of a real therapist’s hands, have lower back heating functionality, and feet and calf rollers to complete your massage therapy experience.

Other home spa items

Additionally, if you plan on giving yourself a pedicure or manicure, ensure you have all the necessary products, such as nail polish remover, cuticle trimmers, and buffing tools.

Snacks and drinks are also important. Opt for serving finger foods and refreshing beverages.

Ensure necessary supplies are within easy reach or on display attractively. You can place the products in the designated spa area or prepare a spa gift basket and hand this to the guests arriving.

The basket should contain what they would use for their chosen spa treatment (ask them beforehand so you can customize their baskets before the day).

Also bring magazines and books in the room to keep your guests entertained.

4. Create a schedule for yourself or a group relaxation session.

Once you've gathered all your spa day necessities, it's time to create a schedule for yourself or a group. Include plenty of time for each activity, so you can indulge in each treatment. Decide which activities will happen first, what order the rest of the events should follow, and when the food should be served.

Be realistic about how much time you can devote to your perfect spa day. And if you’re inviting friends over, see when they’re free and work around everyone’s schedule

In summary

At-home spa day experience is a great way to shower yourself with self-love. It could also be a wonderful bonding time for your friends or family. You can throw a home spa party for a date night to celebrate milestones, occasions, a simple weekend get-together, or mental health break day.
